Several of those undertake food safety training, HACCP training and the Auditing Skills course with leading training provider, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vwa.co.uk\/\">Verner Wheelock<\/a>, based on the Broughton Hall Business Park in Skipton.<\/p>\n<p>Last year the company introduced its first ever Verner Wheelock Excellence Awards to coincide with 25 years in business. There are five awards in total: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vwa.co.uk\/haccp\/haccp-training-courses.html\">HACCP<\/a> Student of the Year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vwa.co.uk\/food-safety\/food-safety-training-courses.html\">Food Safety<\/a> Student of the Year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vwa.co.uk\/auditing\/auditing-training-courses.html\">Auditing<\/a> Student of the Year, Individual Excellence Award and Company of the Year.<\/p>\n<h3>The Winners<\/h3>\n<p>This year\u2019s winners were from a variety of different companies.<\/p>\n<h3>Kathryn Broadburn &#8211; F Smales &amp; Sons<\/h3>\n<p>The Auditing Student of the Year was won by Kathryn Broadburn, a Technical Manager at Grimsby-based fish merchants, F Smales &amp; Sons. Verner Wheelock MD, Alison Wheelock, said, \u201cAuditing is an essential element of the food manufacturing process, especially for completion of a successful BRC audit, and in light of the emphasis on combating food fraud throughout the supply chain. Kathryn was an exceptional student on our FDQ <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link \" title=\"Lead Auditor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vwa.co.uk\/auditing\/lead-auditor-course.html\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">Lead Auditor<\/a> Certificate course and achieved the highest marks of the year in her examination.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Chris Shields &#8211; Symingtons<\/h3>\n<p>Winner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vwa.co.uk\/blog\/food-safety-tips-for-jubilee-parties-and-barbecues-nationalbbqweek\/\">Food Safety<\/a> Student of the Year was Chris Shields from the Consett site of Symingtons which produces the \u2018Look what we found\u2019 and ilumi brands, amongst other products. \u201cSymingtons were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vwa.co.uk\/blog\/2020-verner-wheelock-excellence-award-winners-revealed\/\">winners of the Verner Wheelock Company Excellence Award<\/a> last year,\u201d said Alison, \u201cand we\u2019re delighted to present Chris with the award for Food Safety Excellence this year, following his food safety training course. Successful completion of the course and examination enables delegates to provide training up to a stated level within their own companies, or to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vwa.co.uk\/blog\/ready-for-a-change-why-not-become-a-trainer-training\/\">become a freelance trainer<\/a>. The accolade this time went to Sharron Jacques, a Senior Catering Officer, at Harper Green Junior School in Bolton, Lancashire. This was presented to Strategic Functional Development &amp; Training Director, Anna Skirkowska, based at the Halifax site of the pladis Group (formerly United Biscuits). There are seven pladis sites in the UK, producing sweet and savoury biscuits and cakes, including McVities, Carr\u2019s and Jacobs brands.<\/p>\n<p>Anna said, \u201cWe are thrilled to receive this award. We have been using Verner Wheelock to provide HACCP and food safety training and many other courses for our staff for nearly 20 years and the feedback we receive has always been very positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alison Wheelock added, \u201cWe decided to present the award to pladis Group because we believe their commitment to food safety, and to training, is second to none. We\u2019ve delivered several courses across the full spectrum of food safety training, HACCP, auditing and specialist courses such as Root Cause Analysis, VACCP and TACCP and Managing Food Allergens, both here at our training centre in Skipton and across Pladis\u2019 various sites.
