Welcome to the Verner Wheelock review of October 2014
An international flavour comes to Skipton
We were delighted to welcome 12 international delegates to Skipton during October for our annual ‘Creating Savoury Flavours’ course. This unique, lab-based training course was held in the Food Technology facility at Ermysted’s Grammar School which provided the perfect setting for this hands-on course. Delivered through a combination of lectures and chemistry based practicals and tasting sessions, the course involved delegates worked in groups to produce a range of meat and cheese based flavours.
Alongside the packed teaching programme, the delegates enjoyed the best of Yorkshire hospitality while staying at The Tempest Arms at Elslack. They also tasted some of the best local food including fish and chips from Bizzie Lizzies (while on a canal boat trip), a curry at the Aagrah in Skipton and the official course dinner and wine tasting at the Devonshire Arms where menu choices included roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and traditional sticky toffee pud! A tile painting session at Coffee and Clay was used to stimulate the delegates creativity – an essential element in the flavour creation process
Course tutors, Dr David Baines and Richard Seal commented, “The new venue was superb and contributed to the success of this year’s course. Everything ran smoothly, thanks to Carole and the rest of the Verner Wheelock staff. With all delegates participating fully in the wide range of activities offered to complement the teaching sessions, 2014 has been the best one yet, and we are already planning ahead for the next course in October 2015!”.

RSPH Awards Ceremony 2014
October saw the RSPH annual conference and awards ceremony where the prizes were presented to our three top scoring students from the previous years Level 4 HACCP and Food Safety examinations.
Unfortunately Helen Kearney (Level 4 Award in HACCP) and Peter Smith (Level 4 Award in Food Safety for Manufacturing – joint winner) were unable to attend the event, but Lianne Davis from Symingtons Ltd (pictured) was delighted to attend to collect her award for the Level 4 Food Safety for Manufacturing (joint winner) from John Cridland of the CBI.
NSAFD Women in Work Funding
The National Skill Academy for Food & Drink has launched a UK-wide drive to propel women up the industry career ladder.
The move follows the Academy’s success in securing funding from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills to support training and development for women employed in the sector in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Businesses of any size can access grants of up to 70 per cent on training for women across a range of in-demand food industry skills including:
- Leadership and management
- Technical skills
- Interpersonal Skills.
Academy’s CEO Justine Fosh said the aim of the funding is to help businesses support the advancement of women in the sector. “Women remain under-represented across food and drink manufacturing’s current UK workforce and they are particularly under-represented in management roles as well as in highly-valued engineering and technical roles,” said Fosh. Verner Wheelock has been involved in past Academy efforts to support sector businesses to redress the balance and we are delighted to be able to help our clients access this ‘Women in Work’ project funding again.
