Dispelling the Dieting Myths

15th January 6:30pm – 8:30pm
The Rendezvous Hotel
Skipton, North Yorkshire BD23 2TA

It is over a quarter of a century since the Government recommended a series of Dietary Guidelines which were designed to reduce the incidence of the chronic diseases, especially heart disease.

Since then there has been a big reduction in the amount of fat in the national diet. The original target to reduce saturated fat by 25% has actually been achieved.

However the incidence of obesity continues to increase. The number of cases of diabetes has doubled in the last 15 years and is projected to grow for the foreseeable future. Diabetes is the tip of the iceberg as it is associated with obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and certain cancers. Those with diabetes are up to 4 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease compared to those without.

Clearly something is badly wrong. Verner Wheelock has been studying and evaluating the scientific background to the dietary recommendations and his conclusions include the following:

  • Using the conventional approach to weight loss by reducing calories does not work
  • The scientific justification for the recommendation to reduce fat is fundamentally flawed
  • Fats are an essential dietary requirement and reducing the intake of certain fats may be damaging to health
  • Carbohydrates are not an essential dietary requirement. Excessive intake, especially of sugars is dangerous

Using the results of his work Verner will outline easy and simple changes to the habitual diet that will result in improvements to health and welfare, life expectancy and loss of weight. With a suitable diet many of those diagnosed as diabetics have been able reduce or even eliminate entirely the need for any medication.

He explains:

It is now clear that implementation of the conventional dietary recommendations is actually causing a serious deterioration in the standards of public health. It really is time that there was a thorough re-think as there is convincing evidence that the current advice is responsible for many people dying before their time

Verner was Head of the Food Policy Research Unit at the University of Bradford until 1990 when he left to establish a successful business, Verner Wheelock Associates, which specialises in the provision of training and consultancy for food companies.

He has also been Special Professor in Food Science at the University of Nottingham.
