Evaluation of Supermarkets with respect to Healthy Eating Initiatives

12 December 2006

The third annual assessment of the major supermarkets has just been released by the national Consumer Council entitled “Short-changed on health? How supermarkets can affect your chances of a healthy diet”.

Areas covered in the report include:

The results were as follows:

1st

Sainsbury’s

Joint 2nd

Tesco and Waitrose

4th

M&S

Joint 5th

Asda and Co-op

7th

Somerfield

8th

Morrisons

It was found that the level of knowledge by staff in stores was very low.  For example, 5 out of the 8 gave the wrong information as to whether canned and frozen sweetcorn could count towards your ‘5-a-day’.  The report concludes that staff training in health and nutrition is urgently needed if customers are to be given the correct advice.
