Training for Career Progression

For your career

Qualifications from the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) are recognised by employers throughout the food industry and beyond. In achieving these qualifications you will not only improve your understanding of the subject but you will have a CV that exhibits credible qualifications that demonstrate your ability to apply the knowledge to practical situations in the workplace.

Whether you are aiming for a promotion or applying for a new job, setting up your own business or planning a career change we offer a range of courses that can help you progress up the career ladder.

For advice on course entry requirements or to find out which course is best for you, call Helen Moore on 01756 700802.

Food Hygiene & Safety

From the smallest café or restaurant through to the supermarket or global food manufacturer, all have a duty and a legal requirement to serve safe food. Therefore, it is vital that anyone involved in the process understands how to produce food that will not harm the consumer.

All food handlers should receive some form of food safety training before starting work in a kitchen, shop or food factory. The minimum requirement is the Level 2 course but supervisors and managers will require a higher level of training to ensure they can carry out their role in ensuring the safety of the food.

The CIEH and RSPH (formerly RIPH) food safety qualifications have been restructured to meet QCA requirements. This has made the levels more consistent across a range of industries, and also more specific to your job role.

When you attend one of our RSPH (RIPH) food safety courses you will also be able to choose whether you take an exam in food safety for manufacturing, catering or retailing. Our food safety courses will therefore equip you with the knowledge and skills to produce safe food in a wide range of food industry sectors.

HACCP

Most delegates who attend our HACCP courses are already working in the food industry. It is recommended that all members of a HACCP team have some form of training in the principles of HACCP and our Level 3/Intermediate level course, HACCP – 'Making it Work', is the course we would recommend.

HACCP team leaders, or those wishing to become team leaders or managers should attend the RSPH Level 4/Advanced HACCP – 'Taking it Further' course. They need to understand how to implement and maintain a HACCP system in their work, but it is also a requirement of the BRC Global Standard (Issue 5) that HACCP Team leaders are fully qualified in HACCP.

These two courses are aimed mainly at those working in food manufacture but caterers and food retailers may also find they have a requirement for HACCP. The CIEH Implementing Food Safety Management Procedures course is a one day that covers how to set up a HACCP system. It is ideal for catering managers or owners/proprietors of smaller food businesses. This course is mainly run as an in-house course. Contact us on 01756 700802 for further details.

Nutrition

Our nutrition courses can help you progress in a number of careers including:

  • Catering and hospitality
  • Health promotion
  • New product development
  • Food marketing

If you have a passion for food and healthy eating and would like to pursue a career in this industry the RSPH Certificate in Nutrition and Health is a good place to start.

The next step up is the RSPH Diploma in Nutrition & Health. This course covers all aspects of nutrition in the community and candidates are expected to be able to demonstrate their detailed understanding of the subject through two assignments and examinations. This qualification is ideal for catering managers or those working in health and fitness, caring professions or health promotion.

We also offer a Sports Nutrition option for the Diploma which is ideal for all those involved in food provision in the health and fitness industry, as well as personal trainers and sports coaches or anyone interested in knowing more about the nutrition and energy requirements of athletes.

Auditing Skills

If you are finding there is an increased requirement for auditing within your current job, or you want to move into an auditing role, our Auditing Skills course is the place to start. It will provide you with the ability and confidence to carry out internal, supplier and third party audits

For those aiming to become an auditor or needing a more in-depth knowledge of auditing a complete quality system, Auditor/Lead Auditor course is the one you need to attend. Certificated by VWA, this highly interactive course uses case studies and role play to support the theory, ensuring that you can carry out effective audits with ease.

Becoming a trainer

If you are interested in becoming a registered trainer yourself you will need two types of qualification:

  • A training qualification such as the CIEH Professional Trainers Certificate
  • An advanced level qualification (Level 4/Diploma) in your subject area

In order to offer recognised CIEH or RSPH courses, trainers need to be registered with a training centre or can become a registered centre in their own right.

If you will only be offering non-recognised qualifications such as tailored in-house training then you will not need to register with the RSPH or CIEH or take the advanced level qualification. However, we would still strongly recommend attendance on the Training the Trainer course as it is a highly interactive course that enables you to perfect your training skills while achieving a recognised qualification.
